What Should you do Before Your New Carpet Arrives

Choosing a carpet is exciting, and there are a few things you can do before fitting day arrives which will make the installation much easier and help your fitter make the carpet look the best it can. Here are a few simple jobs to do before your new carpet arrives.

Move the Furniture

The room should be as empty as possible before the fitters arrive. Move the furniture into another room if you can, including smaller items such as lamps, pictures and ornaments. If you have something that can’t easily be moved, like a large wardrobe, let your carpet supplier know before the fitting date. They may be able to move it sufficiently to allow for fitting, but there could be an extra charge.

Take Up the Old Carpet

If you’re replacing an old carpet, it will need to be taken up before the new one is fitted. Some carpet companies offer this service but others will charge extra, so it’s worth checking when you book. If you’re going to do it yourself, hoover the old carpet first and you could also cut it into smaller strips rather than trying to lift the whole thing at once. Once it’s all out, give the floor another good clean to remove any dirt that has been left behind. Opening the windows will also help get rid of the dust.

Check the Floor

Loose floorboards, cracks or uneven patches should be fixed before you lay the new carpet. If there are any pipes or cables that the fitter needs to know about, make sure you tell them before work starts.

Decorate Before the Fitting

If you want to decorate the room as well, try to get the painting finished before your carpet is fitted. If you’ve painted the skirting boards, make sure that the paint is completely dry to avoid any marks or damage during the installation.

Make Room for the Fitters

The easier it is for the fitters to get around, the quicker the job will be. Clear the hallway if possible and make sure they have easy access to the room. If there are washing machines, tumble dryers or other heavy appliances in the room, these should be moved before fitting day, as carpet fitters aren’t able to disconnect or move them.

Getting everything ready before fitting day doesn’t take long, but it can make a big difference. If the room is ready, your fitter can get straight to work and you’ll be enjoying your new carpet before you know it.
