Top tips for choosing a carpet for children
Carpets and children are a mix that tends to make people pull a face halfway between a frown and a scream. It’s a conundrum: those with children tend to want more carpeting because it’s softer and cushions the inevitable falls, yet they also fear that they won’t get very much time out of their new carpet flooring.
In fact, not all carpet is created equal, and there are definite options for choosing the right sort of carpet for your family. Below, we’ve compiled a few of our top tips that will keep your children and your carpet flooring safe:
What’s better for kids, natural or synthetic?
There are pros and cons for either. Those suffering from allergies will wish to opt for our 100% pure wool products, as these have naturally-occurring hypoallergenic properties. Dust mites naturally steer clear of wool as it stays drier and cooler than its synthetic counterparts, making it harder for them to survive. Wool carpet is also easy to clean, making it a great choice for messy little people. The only major disadvantage of wool carpeting is the cost.
Enter synthetic carpets: We offer a range of artificial fibres and blended options that are cheaper than pure wool. These come in every colour and pattern you can imagine and are great for any budget. This makes them a better option if you’re looking for a more temporary solution and want something inexpensive. Synthetic fibres are also easy to clean and won’t readily absorb dirt, although they are less allergy-friendly and, therefore, not an option for everyone.
How do I keep my carpets clean?
Some of our best tried and tested cleaning tips include applying baking soda before hoovering dirty carpets to attract dirt and bacteria (no need to buy those expensive powders), using ice on stains before scrubbing them and minimising wear and tear. The trick with the latter is to move around furniture and toys, so that a different part of the room gets the most use at a given time. This way, your carpet will wear evenly rather than showing spots that are worse off than others.
Ultimately, choosing a carpet no longer needs to be a worry for you if you have children – there are plenty of great options available here at Carpet Design and Flooring. If you need advice or want to visit us in Liverpool, we’re more than happy to help you choose the ideal carpet for your family.
